I have a connection to a server using vpn. I can ping it
OK. A couple of weeks ago, I could map a network drive to
the server with my laptop using xp pro, but could not
using my home pc using win 2k pro. I thought it might be a
problem with zone alarm pro on my pc ( not installed on
laptop) - so I uninstalled it. no luck. Now, when I double
check, I can no longer map a drive to the server with my
laptop - but still can get the vpn connection and ping
just fine.

What am I missing?

I can ping using the IP address OR the server subnet name
assigned to me by our Internet provider. I can connect to
the server using Remote Desktop Connection. There, I do
ipconfig /all and see the host name, e.g. "myserver".
What I'm trying to do is map a drive to
\\myserver\myfolders -- myfolders is a folder containing
various folders, all with appropriate permissions, etc.

I remembered that what has changed is a second NIC,
installed in the server, that was causing some confusion,
so I have unplugged it AND it no longer gets a static IP
address --- it HAD the static address assigned for the VPN.
I changed that to the other NIC (actually onboard
connection) -- so that is the WHY I can't map the way I
did.

But now, I think my problem is something to do with DNS or
WINS because the error that I get is:
"The network path \\myserver\myfolders could not be found.
My laptop VPN connection TCP/IP is set to obtain an IP and
DNS automatically, which it apparently does.

I'm confused as to what has the naming info for my host --
DNS, WINS, etc. Using the IP address of my server PPP as
the DNS doesn't seem to be correct.
????
I'm sure this will make sense, once I have the correct
configuration.
