problem logging into hotmail & yahoo mail

I have a customer's older Gateway w/xp home sp2 in the shop that is having
problems that seem to be related to IE6 and/or activeX. Vanilla web pages
work ok, but when trying to logon to yahoo mail or hotmail, IE puts up "page
cannot be displayed - dns error." The same pages work fine in Firefox on the
same machine, so it is not a DNS issue. Since the customer is trying to use
MSN explorer, and it is basically IE with a pretty face, this also does not
work - won't login. Deleting cookies and IE temp files had no effect.

When I try to run windows update from IE, it pops up the yellow bar saying
that the activeX settings prevent web pages from running installed activex
controls. If I right or left click on the yellow bar, nothing happens, other
than the help bubble. The settings in Internet Options are all correct, with
the Internet security zone being relaxed to default.

Someone on another group suggested that this could be due to the
MUWebControlClass (muweb.dll) being disabled in IE Add-ons, but this does not
show up in the list of add-ons. If this is the culprit, how does one go about
adding it back in?

If this is not the culprit, any ideas on how to fix this short of a repair
reinstall?

Most likely culprits: Anti-virus and/or anti-spyware application(s)
disabling scripting.

The only AV/AS s/w on the system is Norton. I just now disabled script
blocking, restarted IE and got the same results.

Norton what (e.g., NAV, NSW, NIS)?

I don't believe that Norton is the issue. I just now tried disabling it in
msconfig (all related services and executables) and the problem persists.

Ok, problem solved. The remedy was to run regsvr32 on the following dlls:

softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

I did all of them before testing, so I don't know which one was the problem.
Since muweb.dll was not re-registered, that was a red herring.

NAV2005

Back to this.... is it a red herring?

Red herring, at least as far as logging in to Hotmail/Yahoo's concerned.

MUWEB.DLL is associated with Microsoft Update's V6 Engine. Upgrading to NAV
2005 might have something to do with the inability to install/run ActiveX
Controls, including those associated with Windows/Microsoft Update.

I'd recommend posting to the Windows Update-specific newsgroup about this
problem...or just wipe & reload.

Whenever possible, I like to fix the problem instead of doing a WAR. After
re-registering the dlls, windows update now works from IE, and
wuwebcontrolclass now shows up in the list of add-ons.

Now, what caused the problem in the first place? (I still suspect an NAV
upgrade vs clean install.)
