am having a problem installing a Winmodem
in a newly assembled computer with an Asus
A7NX-X board, Win 98SE and AMD Athlon
2600+ CPU.

The Winmodem is a Boca WinStorm 57k and
it functions in my older computer, recognizing
a dial tone and dialing out. This computer also
runs under Win 98SE; it has an Asus P2B board
with a Pentium II 450.

In the newer computer, using the Boca install CD,
the modem is assigned to COM2 and the Device
Manager reports that it is functioning normally.
However the modem does not recognize a dial tone.

In the older computer, which also has a USRobotics
Sportster 57k modem (not a Winmodem) installed
(in an ISA slot), the winmodem is assigned to COM3,
the USRobotics to COM3.

Should I try to specify COM3 for the Winmodem on
the A7NX-X board? Does it require the manual
assignment of the IRQ # in the BIOS?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You could try the following:

1) uninstall the modem again in Control panel and practically.

2) after removal then boot and go into bios and disable comport2

3) reboot win98 and check that there is no com2

4) shut down the pc and insert the modem. power totally off.

5) install soft again
It should then create a software emulated com2

and it should work.

But it is really a pity to use windows 98, that 6 years old crap. If
you use winXP, there might be problems with modem though. The best is
normally to use windows XPs own driver for standardmodem k56.

best regards

Thanks, John, for your suggestions.

I tried this but it didn't work.

One question: where you say "disable comport2"
in the BIOS, are you referring to the option
called "inboard serial port 2"? That's what
I disabled.

In Control Panel/Modems/Diagnostics, More Info
reports "no response" from COM 2. It also
reports no IRQ and no address.

Is there anything to be tried before I install
Win XP?

Thanks in advance.

I've got an aopen fm56 px controllerless modem working under XP on an Asus
MB. It works fine. Its on Com4.
I had to install the Aopen drivers for it before XP found it. The XP
drivers didn't work the last time I tried em.
You need to clean up ANY reference to the modem BEFORE letting XP find the
modem and tell it which drivers to install.
WIN98 is a bear to work with. If you can dump it go for it.
