Installing windows 2000 on a compaq desktop, clean formatted hard disc from
a CD, gives me file copy problems. Install errors with file not be able to
copy from CD to hard disc. Option of retry, skip for cancel are giving when
file(s) fail to copy.

Each time I try, random files suffer this copy problem.

Have tried different/several hard disc drives ( various capacities) as well
as two separate windows 2000 install CD.

Image copy from a CD to hardisc works, however its a n image from a
different computer. Thus inferring that the hard disc does not suffer from a
'write/copy' problem.

Any clues/help?

May have bad sectors on your HDD

Try reformatting with this command

2. At the "A" prompt (A:\) type the following:

format c: /U /C /S (assume c:\ drive letter)

Command Legend:
/U= Unconditional Format - ignores deleted cluster fragments
/C= Re-tests currently marked bad clusters for recovery
/S= Transfers necessary system files so disk can boot

Greetings --

The specific problem you're experiencing is most often caused by
defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of likelihood, either
RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. In rare instances, it can be
caused by a defective CD.
