Hi gang!

This is a puzzlement... just tried to install a new W/D drive in my 1.4 GHz
Athlon machine with a Giga-byte GA-7ZX-H mobo. I am running Windows XP
Home. The drive, while accessible, keeps telling me that I need to
reinstall the drivers for the drive (?????)... a call to W/D got me no
results... they are not sure what the problem is but think it is OS
related... The OS is up to date and the mobo has the latest BIOS flash
installed. I have tried all the tricks.... remove and reinstall, reboot,
etc. The result is a window telling me it cannot install the software and
it specifically says "The specified service does not exist as an installed
service. It occasionally tells me that the syntax of the drive is invalid
(usually trying to install when I boot the computer up.

Any ideas???

Hi Will,

So windows xp with sp1 et al is installed on first drive and this is a
second drive you're trying to add, yes ?

Do you have the correct cable, if its ATA66 or faster, you need an 80 wire
cable.

Whats your existing ide config, what devices to you currently have as
Primary Master Primary Slave Secondary Master Secondary Slave

Where out of these 4 locations are you adding the device. Are you sure its
jumpered correctly in terms of master or slave, I never use cable select,
it always causes problems somewhere down the line, particlulary when there
are 2 devices on the channel. Always jumper master/slave. Make sure the
cablle is the correct way around, blue to the motherboard black for the
master, middle grey connector for a slave.

Make sure that its visible in the bios startup normally second screen which
gives the ide devices and their detected speeds. If the bios doesn't
corrrectly detect the size and speed, you need to fix that first.

Check in device manager for both ide channels that in advanced settings dma
if availble is selected.

Is it actually a new disk, or one thats been taken from another system,
reason for asking is xp can get quite upset about adding in disks which were
set as dynamic disks in another system, I had a problem with this several
months ago.

You say its accessible, how ?
Do you see it in

start/run
diskmgmt.msc

If so does it show as online. Does it show as basic or dynaamic.

What happens if you try to create a partiton ?

Check the system event log for any disk related errors, such as timeouts, or
retries.

Brand new out of the wrapper...

Do you see it in

start/run
diskmgmt.msc
It is visible, just not correctly installed... can read and write to it ...
just tries to re-install every time the computer starts up.

Primary in PM 8.0

It creates one.

Nothing here.... went to shop where purchased... installed a different
drive... had the same results.

Looks like it's time to clean and re-install op. sys.

Thanks!

Why are you using partition magic ?

Originally this was a W98SE machine with the original drive divided into
4... ran out of room on C drive so used PM to combine the virtual drives.

Will

Is it set for LBA addressing in the bios ?

Hey Will,

I found this on the western digital site.

Adding a Second Drive:
1.. Make sure your drive is identified on the boot up screen. If not,
please refer to our knowledge base article on how to identify drives in your
BIOS, Answer ID 54.

2.. Access Disk Management by first clicking on the Start button.

3.. Select Run.

4.. In the text box type diskmgmt.msc and click OK

5.. When Disk Management opens, a wizard may appear entitled: Initialize
and Convert Disk Wizard.
Note: You must use this wizard to write a Signature to the drive
otherwise, the drive will not work with Windows XP. If the wizard does not
appear, you may need to manually complete this process following the steps
below:

1.. Right click on the name of the drive to be initialized. (Drives are
numbered as follows: drive 0 being the boot drive and drive 1-3 are all
other drives. For CDs, the first CD is CD 0 the second CD 1 and so forth.)

2.. Choose Initialize from the menu that appears.

3.. The next screen shows the drive you selected to initialize. Make
sure the drive is checked and click Next.

4.. You will have the option to convert the drive from basic to dynamic
storage.
Leave this unchecked and click Next.

5.. Click Finish

Did you do this ?

Paul

I'm liking the sound of this, less and less. Was xp cleanly installed in a
fresh partition , or was 98 upgraded in situ.
Is any partition on the 80GB disk now spreading over onto the new 120GB :-(

Unable to find initialize in any menu of the disk manager... right click
only allows for properties.

Will

Ah, so its visible in disk mangement, is it showing as Basic or Dynamic,
online or offline ?

I just wonder if you formatted it with partition manager if xp doesn't like
the master boot record PM wrote to it.
Could you completely wipe the disk and reinstall.

Are you familiar with the windows xp diskpart tool
You could try using the CLEAN command to wipe the disk
