OK, so I have this new job, part of which is maintaining a file server
for a department for imaging data storage.

We have Win2k Server running with Veritas 9.0. This happened when I
tried to update our virus software, but since it was running, I didn't
pursue it much since it was running fine and I was short on time. Now
hoever I have to update to Veritas 9.1.

So I run the install and get an error about "cannot access file or
path" and it points to an MSI file in the temp directory within the
winnt/installer directory. I have read everywhere all morning, and one
of the common threads is that the System needs full priveledge in the
security tab of the winnt/installer directory. However, when I check
the security tab, the only group with *any* permission is 'Everyone'.
And even with me logged in as the administrator, it will not allow me
to add users or group to access the directory.

I have logged in as every administrator I can see in the users list to
no avail. Is there a way to add the system and administrators group to
the security permissions for winnt/installer? I don't know why, but it
looks like someone/something removed all but 'Everyone' from being able
to access it beyond 'READ'. Thanks!

P.S. I have a Win2k workstation sitting right next to it, and when I
check the permissions on the winnt/installer directory, administrators,
system, and everyone are in it, along with every other machine I
checked. It seems only the server is missing SYSTEM and ADMINISTRATORS
permissions from the security tab.

Got it all, was instructed by a few at Neowin to take ownership, and fo
some reason, that option eluded me until one of them mentioned it. Hop
this isn't a sign to my day hehe
