I downloaded the service pack without a problem but when i try to install it
gets to the point where it says "Checking for necessary space" and just sits
there indefinitely, i let it sit for about 15 hours and nothing changed, i
have 167 GB of free space on the hard drive so i don't think the problem is
lack of space, and cant find any way to get past that point.

Hmm, maybe you forgot to quit a program?
Anti virus software could affect installation.

I'd make do a virus & anti spyware scan as well before starting the
installation. I have read of adware/spyware affecting the installation.
Neil

try installing it via
safemode.

When the problem first happened i didnt have any anti-virus software so that
couldnt have been causing the problem, since then did a few different virus
and spyware scans, ran disk cleanup and defrag, then turned off all programs
and disconnected network and still ran into same problem trying to install
it.

Tried installing service pack in safe mode and still ran into same problem,
it would get to "Checking for necessary space" and just sit there not getting
any farther. kind of frustrating its not getting any kind of error message or
freezing or crashing it just gets to that point and won't do anything else.
