while completing installation of the above anti virus
patch, my installation was halted by a notice screen that
stated " check that cryptgraphic service is running on
your computer". the download would not complete because
of this and I do not understand the next step to take in
checking on my "cryptographic service". please advise.

i am running a dell dimension 8250 desktop with Windows
XP home edition, and a standard on-line McAfee antivirus
program.

thanks.

1. Start the Administrative Tools utility in your Control Panel.
2. Double-click Services.
3. Right-click :Cryptographic Services", and then click Properties.
4. Click "Automatic" for Startup type, and then click Start.
5. Try installing the Updates again. If the problem persists, go to Step 6.
6. Click Start, and then click Run.
7. In the Open box, type: CMD , and then click OK.
8. At the Command Prompt, type (or Copy & Paste) the following commands,
each individually, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

Type EXIT to close the command prompt, and then install the patch again.

Try this: Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Select "Normal Startup", click "apply" and reboot.

| I am having the same problem that David is having. I've
| already done both things you suggested. In addition, I've
| deleted the \windows\system32\catroot2 folder - another
| suggestion I found on Technet. None of these fixed the
| problem. I still can't install the patch.
