i cant seem to insert any sound clips from my files. i
used to be able to but now the paper clip guy comes up and
says "powerpoint was unable to insert sound file" and
doesnt provide any explanation as to why i cant or what to
do to change the problem so i am able to. my sound files
are all used by real player but even after changing them
to windows media player, they still wouldnt insert into
the slide show. please let me know what my options are.

It may depend on what type of music files you are trying
to play. Are they mp3s, midi, wav, etc. It doesn't matter
which program you use to play the music, it matters what
type of music file it is. If it's not compatible with
Power Point, it won't work. I tried and mp3 and a midi
file and they were able to play. If it's not the program,
check your sound card and speakers and make sure they are
working properly.

To play music for the Power Point presentation, click on
INSERT->MOVIES AND SOUNDS->SOUND FROM FILE. Then look for
the music you want to play in your presentation. Make sure
you can see the music file where you have it stored. If
you need to change the "FILE OF TYPE" to have the music
file appear on your screen to select, then it might not
work. But if you see the file when "SOUND FILE" is
selected when searching for the file, then it should be ok.

When you select your file, your "helper" for the program
will ask you if you want the music to play automatically
in the background when the presentation starts or to click
on the "Bell" to start the music. Select whichever you
prefer.

If you want the music to start automatically and you don't
want it to diplay on your slides, you can drag it outside
the slide and the music will still automatically play.
Another way to hide it is to make the "Bell" really small
by cliking on it and resize the "Bell" to whichever size
you desire.

If you save the Power Point Presentation onto a floppy
disk, make sure you have the music file on the disk as
well along with the correct directory. Remember, the music
file is not save in Power Point, Power Point looks for the
directory of the file and that's how it's able to play the
file.

I hope this information will help solve your problem.
Again, check to see if your sound card and speakers are
working properly. Also, check what type of music file you
want to play. It might not be compatible to Power Point,
so double-check to make sure.

well my ,music files are in MP3 format and they used to
work when inserting them into power point but now they
dont. it just says "pp was unable to insert music file" i
dont know what to do because i really need to get sound in
and my service provider wont help me since they no longer
cover these type of problems.it may have something to do
with my sound card becasue the computer had a problem with
the sound card and needed to be reinstalled.it may have a
connection to this problem. if you know what i can do
please respond. thanks

I would start by reading the PPT and multimedia tutorial at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm

In section 3, see especially the test to see if your file should play in
PPT. Go to Start/Run and type in either mplay32.exe (WinXP/2000/NT) or
mplayer.exe (Win98). Try to play the MP3 there. If it plays, it should
insert into PPT. If it doesn't, PPT won't be able to play it either.

Next, check your MCI settings. On some versions of Windows, these will
be in some INI files (Win98/WinME). In others (WinXP/2000/NT), they'll
be in the Registry. The tutorial explains where to look.

I'm having the same problem and I'm trying to find a solution. If I
purchase a song (note that I did say purchase) from Napster and have it
downloaded onto my computer, I cannot have it play in my PowerPoint
slideshow. If I use the Windows Media Player to copy a song of a CD I have
at home, it will play the song in PowerPoint. However, in both situations I
have to change "Files of type" to "All Files" to see the sound file. I'm
wondering if the sound file I download from Napster is secured in some way
even though I've purchased the music.
