My computer does not respond after I press shutdown-turnoff. To tide over, I
press log-off, switch user, then press turn-off at the left hand bottom of
the screen. With this, a dialogue box panel shows up and says others are
logged on, even though I am the only user and the administrator. Then I
press the 'yes' to shut down, the computer shuts down. Please help me to
solve this problem.

Shutdown problems are generally caused by a program and/or process
refusing to exit gracefully. With Vista, drivers and/or
not-quite-compatible programs running resident (antivirus, etc.) are the
prime suspects. Shutdown problems can also be caused by malware.

1. Determine that the computer is virus/malware-free:

2. Go through this shutdown troubleshooter if your machine is clean:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

3. Check and see if Vista itself detects a problem:

Control Panel>System and Maintenance>Performance information and tools
Advanced tools in left pane

Start > All Programs > Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions >
View Problem History
