Hello:

I have text file of phone numbers (10 digits) I'm trying
to import into Access as a Fixed Width and set break lines
after the first 3 digits, then the secord set of three
digits. Ex 999(break)999(break)9999. In the import text
wizard, the first line has a yp in front of the first
phone number. This is not seen when opening the text file
directly. If I contiune with the wizard, it's not
importing any data. The text file is automatically
generated by another program too. Does anyone know what
the two character could be and how I can rid them from the
text file so that I can import the rest of the data?

Thanks,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

I don't understand what you mean by
the first line has a yp in front of the first
phone number

Do you mean the actual characters "yp", and that in the text import
wizard it looks like
yp2225551212
3335551212
...
but that if you double-click the textfile you see
2225551212
3335551212
?

If so, try this:

1) open the textfile with Notepad.

2) if the yp is visible, delete it

3) scroll to the end of the file. If there are any extraneous characters
there, delete them.

4) Do File|Save As. If there is a dropdown list at the bottom of the
Save As dialog called "Encoding" or something similar, set this to
"ANSI". (I'm guessing that it may be set to UTF-8.) Give the file a new
name and save it.

With luck, the file will now import properly. If not, post again in this
thread with (a) information on the versions of Access and Windows you
are using (including the languages involved) and (b) a clearer
description of yp.
