i have been sent some moving gif pictures on an e-mail, i
want to save these, when i click save picture it only
gives me the option to save it as a bmp, is there a way i
can make it give me more options.

Try running Disk Cleanup to delete all your
temp and temporary internet files...also
empty your recycle bin.
