Hi, I have Windows 2000 installed on an old 98 or 99 Dell Dimension Desktop.
I don't know what kind of CD ROM I have, but it is not working right now. I
think Windows knows that it is there, but there is some problem with it.
However, there must be a solution to this problem because it only recently
happened, and I think I know what might have caused it. I have an HP CD
burner (HP CD Writer 8200 series), and I tried to install it on my computer
again(I install it and uninstall it all the time because I get tired of it
being on my computer sometimes due to a weird logo that comes up when you
start it up). While the Setup process was going on, Windows was trying to
install the CD burner on its own with Plug and Play. I had already plugged
the CD burner in, and I have plugged in its USB connection. Therefore, two
types of installation were going on at the same time, but the only one that
should have been going on was the HP Setup program from the installation
disk in the CD ROM. The plug and play installation was just a large screen
that said Adaptec CD something on it. I ended up closing it. The setup ended
and it instructed me to restart Windows. I restarted it, it asked for the
Installation CD again, I put it in, and that is when my CD ROM ceased to
exist. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the CD ROM, and I have
search for new drivers, but it always says that the driver I have is OK. I
need to reload the driver somehow I think ... but I think I have already
done that several times after I search for a driver update(because it tells
me I already have a good driver, and I restart the computer afterwards). The
description of the CD ROM in my device manager says, "LG CD-ROM CRD-8480C",
then the device status says, "This device is not working properly because
Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31). Click
Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device." Once I go into
Troubleshooting, I have no idea what is going on. If anyone has any advice,
feel free to share it with me. I know nothing about computers. Thanks!
