Problem formatting cells as currency

I am having a problem formatting cells to currency for
data that was imported into Excel from a text file. It
was imported in the format 49420. 8 but will not accept
any formatting. Does anyone know how to correct this?
 
The data is most likely in text format and will therefore not accept any
formatting. Copy an empty cell, select all your data and then do Edit / Paste
Special / Add.

If this doesn't fix it then you probably have garbage characters in there.
These can be removed by running Dave McRitchies Trimall macro - Then do the
routine above if data is not as you want.
