problem creating shortcut

As long as I have used my computers, I have right clicked
and made desktop shortcuts for everything that I use
frequently, I rarely use the start menu. This includes my
cd rom and floppy disc. This allows me to start a disk
from the desktop without using the annoying autorun
feature. Now all of a sudden I cannot do it. If I make a
shortcut for e drive send to the desktop and try to use
it, It pops up a little window with a flashlight
searching for the device and gives me the option to
browse. It is almost like the computer is looking for a
program to run when using the cd. It then gives me a file
address (a previously run game that had been used in the
drive) and asks me if I want to associate this file with
the icon.
If I turn on autorun or access the drive from "my
computer" it works just fine. Do any of you use shortcuts
this way, and do you see any reason it wouldn't work? I
did it forever on win 98, and thought I had been doing it
until recently on xp. I went back a full 2 months on
system restore and I said it couldn't restore
because the computer had not changed...any ideas? gm

Now I am also getting an error message "cannot load vital
strings" if there is a cd in the drive and I try to click
the icon to call it up...thanks...gm

Is there a sure-fire way to add a shortcut to the A:\,
the D:\, and a Removable Device (E:\) to the desktop and
start menu?
We are setting up PCs in a school environment. All the
latest patches are installed.
I also have a shorcut to a USB Drive on the desktop. When
the USB drive is physically removed, I get a red question
mark over the shortcut. Any workarounds??

Thanks Kelly---your site is great!!
