Problem copying user profiles

Not sure this belongs here, but let me ask-

Had a HD crash, replaced main (bootable) with new 320G, reloaded what had
been backed up and various programs. Computer name came out as Owner
(although I swear I never put that name in) and now I would like to change
it back to David. Normal procedures for doing this, however, end up with
either" Failed to set security on the Destination Profile. Error - The
process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"
or Failed to set security on the Destination Profile. Error - Access is
denied"

All attempts to gain security access to the new (destination) profile have
failed to work - Method #1 - CP/System/Advanced/User Profile Settings etc.,
or Method #2, KB811151.

Would welcome any suggestions

I'm guessing that you ended up with a user account on the new installation named
Owner. You'd prefer it be David. If that's the case you need to create a new
user account named David and log into it at least once.

You now need to log off from the David account and log on with a third account
which is an administrator. This is the key. You can't be logged on as Owner or
David while copying the files. You can use the built in Administrator account or
create an admin account for temporary use. Once you've copied the Owner profile
over to the David account you can delete this third account.

OK - I've tried that several times, but this time it worked. I was using
the CP/System/Advanced/User Profile Settings route, only I had been
misunderstanding some of the instructions along the way. The third or
neutral user I created came up in the 'Category' view on the screen, and the
dialog boxes you use going through the process explain things a little more
clearly (at least I thought so)

Anyway, we're OK, and I do thank you much

Hi

I hope you dont mind me posting on this thread here but i am getting the
same error message as david is, and ive tried going through a different
account.

Whats happened is the partition on a customers computer was set to only 10Gb
for the main partition and inevitably it filled up but despite the warnings
and having exactly the same problem on another computer they carried on using
it until there was no space left at all so windows couldnt save the or load
the profile so its now loaded a temp local profile.
Ive extended the partition so theres more room to work with now and managed
to create a new profile and transfer settings from another profile but theres
one that gives the error message "Failed to set security on the Destination
Profile. Error - The process cannot access the file because it is being used
by another process"


Have you got any ideas i could try to try and get the profile copied over??

I had this same problem but none of the standard fixed worked. To make a long story short, I found that there were errors in some sub-folders and ownership of the source profile folder.

I reset the permissions via "Replace permissions on all child object..." on the source profile's Advanced Security Settings tab and by resetting folder ownership for the source profile (and all sub-folders) to Administrators.

Once I did so, I could copy the profile just fine.
