Sometimes, when I:
1.Transfer files to MP3 player
2.Copy files from one place to another on the hard disk
3.Copy files from CD into MP3/WMA
4.Write files to a CDR or CD-RW

PC locks up (i.e.doen't respond to mouse or keyboard), often the screen goes
blank, and I have to reboot.
I don't know how to describe the problem better than this.

Any suggestions?

Try to isolate whether one particular drive is always being accessed when
it happens. Check the drive data cables and if the problem persists then
run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics (available from their
website) and/or selectively unplug the opticals, trying to replicate the
problem. Check power supply voltages with a multimeter or at least with
the motherboard monitor reading but it's probably not voltage-related.

Are you running a Microsoft operating system by any remote chance?
It a llong shot I know. But I though I would kust mention it.

Possible memory problems seem most likely.
Get and run memtest86.

OK. I ran the test overnight and after 14 passes there were no reported
errors.

Any other suggestions?

I ought to mention that the problem occurrs mainly when copying large blocks
of files, e.g. tens of Mb or more.

What OS, Processor, Motherboard? There have been patches for some OS,
motherboard, processor combinations. Have you applied critical updates and
any updates dealing with drives, cache, or chipset for your system?

Only got one hard drive!

I'll investigate, thanks.
