Hello all,
I'm having problems with jpeg images that I copied to CD's. I have
copied them successfully on the CD (at least i think I have.....i eject
the newely made CD and reinsert it and the folders appear with the jpeg
images on them...), but the people I send the CD to cannot bring them
up on their computer. One friend even went to Kinko's to see if they
could find them....
In researching this problem I read that if you copy CDs from Windows XP
that only XP computers can read them. do you think that this may be
the problem? Any other suggestions? I'm at a complete loss and would
really appreciate any help, input and advice..
thanks for your time
Teri

Your findings are correct. You copy with XP you need XP to open.
You can get around this by adding files to the XP created CD.
Go to this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
and download the free CD slideshow generator. The name of the file is
slideshow.exe.
Download it in one of your folder or better yet make a new folder first,
like XP slide show, and download it there.
Then double click on the file to install it. All you have to do.
Now when you use XP to copy photos, at one point the Wizard will ask you if
you want to make an automatic slide show (or something like this, can't
remember exactly because I have not used it recently). You just answer YES
and three files will be added to the photo files on the CD. When this CD is
inserted in a computer other than XP (even a Mac) you just wait about 15-20
seconds and the slide show should start.
There may be some other problem. Kinko is running on XP, I am sure of this.
There should be no problem there, but I certainly never tried this there.

Thank you, Yves, you've been most helpful.

I downloaded slideshow.exe and clicked on "Yes" re :slideshow when
prompted during the burn process ( i remeber being asked that the first
time and I believe I checked "no"...don't ask me why..) I too am
stumped as to why she could not see photos at Kinko's. I just burned
another copy and will look for a non-XP computer to try it out. I'll
let you know what happens.
Thanks for your time...

I think that the reason that these cd's cannot be read, is that they have
not been finalized or closed. You have a multi-session cd which cannot be
read by many players. Your burner should have come with some software that
would allow you to copy files, jpegs, etc to your cd and then close or
finalize the cd. Use that software.

My Plextor came with Roxio, but many other burners come with Nero.

Steve, Thanks for the link, I read it and, in theory, I understand what
you are saying about the cd not being finalized......but I'm a little
lost as to locating the software that came with my burner. All the
programs I have came with my HP computer. I just click on the left hand
column "copy these photos to CD" and the XP wizard pops up, which
mentions Roxio. What other software should I be looking for? When I
pop in a blank CD, a window pops up (what action do you want to take).
Burn/copy with itunes, Real, Windows media player and something called
Sonic are the programs that are presented to me for options. I
usually click "take no action" , open the program/folder I wish to copy
and start from there. I burn Audio CD's with itunes...this is my first
attempt at copying photos to CD.
Thanks for your help.....I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I don't know what HP includes. You can call and ask them. Tell them you want
to be able to create a data cd that is finalized or closed at the end of the
burn. If they don't know what you are talking about, hang up and call back,
or ask for a supervisor.

I think Roxio provides the software that Microsoft has built into XP.

If Sonic is a choice from the auto-play window, I would try that. Sonic DVD
is another product that has some of the features of Roxio and Nero. If it
does not do what you want, I would recommend Roxio. It has always worked for
me. Whatever software you use, make sure that the option to finalize or
close the cd is on.

The software you are looking for is almost certainly by Roxio.

Check through "All Programs..." for the Roxio suite.

The "Create a Data CD" program will have a "finalize disk" option.

In fact, I never use the built-in XP data CD capability--I just open
the CD/DVD burning software directly and set up my disk contents.
It is much more versatile and can burn DVDs, not just CDs.
