problem converting MPEG-2 to AVI

I've got a new JVC Everio media camera which saves video in .MOD format
files, which i've been lead to understand are MPEG-2 files, and just need to
be renamed to .mp2v files. Then reading the various threads on this
discussion group and by also visiting PapaJohn's (very useful) website I've
realised that I also need to then convert the file to an AVI file.

I'm very much a novice at all this, but when I do the conversion using the
suggested VirtualDub software, the resulting file is a) HUGE in comparison to
eh original, and b) lose the synch of video and sound. When I play the
output clip in real player or MM2 the clip seem to go into slow motion for a
couple of seconds mid way, but the sound remains OK; the sound then finishes
before the video.

I've tried a couple of differnt clips from my camera, and get thesame
result. Playing the uncoverted MPEG-2 file in Media Player is fine, so it
must be the converter that is causing the issue.

I've not idea what any of the settings in VirtualDub do or mean !

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks !

the Setup > Other Software page of my site has a link to my newsletter #16,
an introduction to Virtual Dub... if you don't select a compression codec
for the video, you get an uncompressed one which is 5 times bigger than
DV-AVI....

VDubMod is what you want to convert MPEG-2 files... it works the same way as
VirtualDub...

I was just looking over that older newsletter... the world has turned and
it's OK for the overview of how to use Virtual Dub, but a number of my
personal preferences have changed.

The newsletter says I'll probably use the Windows Media 9 option for
compression.... I've been using the Panasonic DV option... which is another
download (see my Setup > Other Software page)... but that codec requires the
input file to be standard DV size of 720x480... if it isn't I apply the
resize filter to make it that size for the rendering.
