If anybody can help with this my friend and I would be
extremely grateful.
My friend bought a computer with windows Xp installed, and
when it comes to tech support for Xp i am essentially
useless so i am coming to the newsgroup for help.
At some point my friend lost her connection to her cable
internet, and under instruction from the provider we went
to a dos prompt and entered "ipconfig /renew", and we get
the error message "An error occured while renewing
interface local area connection, an operation was
attempted on somethign that is not a socket".
We had been sent to support.microsoft.com to find answers
and instructions but as of yet i haven't been able to find
anythign telling me what to do.
If anybody has encountered this problem and knows how to
fix it, or even knows how to fix it, and is willing to
help please email me at (e-mail address removed)
As i said, any and all help is appreciated and hopefully
someone out there is kind and knowledgable enough to help
us out.
Thanks everyone.

If she is connected through a router, try restarting the router by unplugging it for 10 seconds then plugging it back in. If this is a wireless connection, same thing for the wireless access point unless it is combined with the router. If she has neither a router or WAP, or if that step doesn't help, do the same to the cable modem. Restarting the computer after any of those steps is worth a try if the connection doesn't resume on it's own.

In Windows XP, the command line renew is really not necessary. You can right click on the connection icon in the Notification Area next to the clock, and select "Repair" to do the same thing.
