Hope somebody out there can help. I spent the whole weekend on this with no
success. I have looked over this newsgroup and not seen this kind of
problem.

I have two standard Window XP machines. All up to date with downloads etc.
They are connected to the internet through a Netgear (RT314) gateway router.
Both computers access the internet fine. The problem is looking at files on
each other computer.

In the case of computer A. I can see and access files on computer B no
problem if that folder is configured as shared. (I have ICF off on both
machines, also firewalls off for anti-virus software on both machines).

For the reverse direction however I can see folders on computer A but cannot
open them. I get the following message:-
\\computerA\folderxxx is not accessable . You might not have permission to
use this network resource.Contact the administrator to find out if you have
access permisions...

What has me baffeled is both computers are setup essentialy the same
software wise. I am the administrator on both. I set file sharing to
"everyone" for the relevent folders on each machine. I can ping in both
directions no problem. I am only using TCP/IP,Client for Microsoft Networks,
and File and Printer Sharing. I tried adding NetBEUI, no effect.

Suggestions please

Are you using the same name and password to log onto both computers? If
not, do both machines have the name and password used to log onto the other
computer in the User account list?

i am having a similar problem, i was connecting one
computer that was running Windows 2000 to an office
network of about 10 computers, all running windows XP.
the computer running windows 2000 can see and use all
files, and the other computers can see that the windows
2000 machine is there, but they get a password prompt to
view the files, even tho i have it listed that everyone
can use them. I upgraded the windows 2000 machine to XP,
but do to a lot of software, i didnt do a full format, so
it kept all of the win2000 networking structure.
all computers in my case have different usernames, and we
keep passwords blank, as we are small enough that
security isnt necc. at the OS level.
are you saying that i need to create a user name for each
computer that i let view the files?

Yes Richard I am using exactly the same name and password on each machine.
I don't know if this will help, but SOMETIMES if I completely remove my
antivirus software on computer A I can read files on it from B. I have
installed and uninstalled it several times, sometimes I can read from A from
B if uninstalled, currently I cannot.! At first I thought it was just
something specific to that software (PC-illion 2002), however I tried
installing antivirus from Norton and another Panda in those cases as well I
could not read A from B. I had all "Personal Firewalls off" Also I have
PC-illion installed on B and yet can read it fine from A always. This thing
is driving me up the wall, more suggestions would be appreciated.

Absolutely. If the XP computer has the shared folders on it, and you want
to be able to allow Jim, Joe and Pete to see and use the shared folders,
then you'll need to put Jim, Joe and Pete into the User list on the XP
computer. They should then be able to see the shared folders and use the
files in them.

What firewall software are you using? Maybe you want to consider
uninstalling it rather than simply disabling it, at least until you get your
problems sorted out.

Maby this helps. I have turned off XP simplel file shareing and selected
particular folders to share W2000 style. The thing that strikes me as
suspicious is that when I go to set Security and try and 'add' users (me).
If I hit the "Locations Button" only the current computer comes up. ie A on
A and for computer B, B on B. Should I not be able to see both locations
with users in both within a workgroup. Its almost as if I am communicating
across the computers as a guest -- I am of course loges in as an
administrator.

Anyway if any of the above helps please reply.
Thanks in advance.

If you can see the folders but cannot access them, it probably is a
permissions issue. Assuming you are running XP Pro, try:

1. On Machine A, turn off simple file sharing.

2. On Machine A, set NTFS (Security tab - NOT Sharing tab) permissions on
the shared folder to Everyone - full control.

Hello,

it seems to me that the firewall software is still causing a conflict at least for computer B.
As you found out, file sharing and browsing works if the antivirus/firewall software is removed.

As a test, don't install the firewall component from the antivirus package on computer B.
You mentioned that the firewall was off (disabled) when computer A could not see computer B.
I have found that in some cases you have to uninstall a software component to make sure that
it does not create a conflict.

Thanks guys for hanging in there on this issue. I have experemented some
more. It does not seem to be the antivirus software. I just noticed that it
is something related to sharing folders on particular drives. If I put
shared folders on a D, or E drive no problem going in either directions. I
also cannot read CD drive H. I have looked over the drives to see what they
have in common

C: it's an ATA interfaced drive NTFS Can NOT read from another network
computer
D: SCSI interface NTFS Can read from another network computer
E: SCSI Drive FAT32 Can read from another network computer
F: SATA interface NTFS Can read from another network computer
G: Zip drive Can read from another network computer
H CD drive Can NOT read from another network computer
I: DVD drive Can NOT read from another network computer
J SanDisk USB interfaced flash memory card Can NOT read from another network
computer

I have looked at all the simple/obvious things. I set folders to shared by
everyone.

Anybody got suggestions.
