Hello,

I am having a problem installing and using BCM. Whenever I try to add an
Outlook data file for a BCM database I get an error message that: "There was
a problem connecting to the database engine". A second popup then says
"ServiceEntry: User canceled".

I have added my user account (and Everyone and Authenticated users) to the
BCMUsers groups as per Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 830318, but to no
effect. I have tried installing the BCM SP1, and re-installing the BCM.

I have installed:
* Lotus Notes Outlook connector
* SQL Server 2000
* VS.NET 2003
* Office 2003
* Out company uses Novell

I'd appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

Simon--

One thing that caught my eye was that you are using VS.NET 2003. My concern
was that if you are using conflicting .net versions with the one natively
installed with BCM (since it is a .net add-in to outlook), you can have
problems connecting the data base engine. *But I don't think you are at
all* unless you have a more advanced .net framework with something else I
don't know about. I noticed from
http://www.gotdotnet.com/community/messageboard/Thread.aspx?id=248560

The original Visual Studio .NET (sometimes referred to as VS.NET 2002, or
VS7.0) only uses .NET 1.0.
Visual Studio .NET 2003 (VS7.1) only uses .NET 1.1.
Visual Studio 2005 (VS8.0) only uses .NET 2.0.

that with VS you're using .net 1.1 and I believe so is BCM. Alexander
Gorlach has made patches that will allow the coexistence of multiple .net
frameworks here should you be using two diffferent ones. I was trying to
nail down what version BCM installs--I think I remember it's 1.1plus.

I posted tips a couple days ago you might check out in a thread titled
"Outlook w/ Business Contact Manager Try These Tips I and II. Maybe
something there will help.

Chad,

Thanks for your response. You were right - the problem was the installation
of .NET 2. I uninstalled version 2 and the BCM started working! Thanks for
the tip.

Glad to hear this Simon! It'd be nice for them to include a * about mixing
..net versions* caveat on the setup--this would be a suggestion I will take
along with a plea for MSFT to get all the tips for getting BCM up and
running into *one single MSKB and a page on MSFT's Outlook (Office) site* to
Patricia's blog or Bob Cooley who does supportability liasons from some of
these groups for Office. The KB that Microsoft came out with to
troubleshoot BCM on August 13, 2004 has only a fraction of the issues that
can keep BCM from installing or more frequently keep that data base engine
from associating with Outlook. I mean this one:

The Microsoft Business Contact Manager add-in for Microsoft Office Outlook
2003 does not associate with any Outlook profile: 870641 August 13, 2004
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;870641

Nor is there all the information on getting BCM in and up and running on
the BCM Assistance list of Articles on the Office website here--they list
only a couple points:

http://office.microsoft.com/assista...872441033&CTT=6&Origin=HP010729111033

The reason I think they need to warn people is that now so many developers
are making .net applications and they are going to invoke different versions
of the .net framework, not to mention that a lot of the RSS feeds that have
become so popular are using them--including a lot of the Microsoft developer
blogs.

I just checked before I saw your post because I had meant to nail down what
..net framework I had installed when BCM prompted me to (this had been a
problem for me as well because I was testing the Longhorn Command shell and
it uses a .net framework that is 2+). Having that on board glitched me from
getting the data base engine for BCM running.

I think that the .net framework that BCM installs is 1.03.31113.03 as best I
can tell.

Best,
