i have a network currently running a laptop (wireless) and a pc
(ethernet). on my pc (win2k), for the past month, it takes several
attempts to connect to a web address or email. typing in an address
will give either a DNS error or a default search page... but after
trying two or three times it connects. email will say 'cannot connect
to server' but again will connect after several attempts. the whole
time the laptop is able to access the internet. the drivers for my nic
were updated, but i wasn't able to connect to get them again to make
sure they weren't corrupted, so i rolled back to the previous drivers
and the problem has persisted. it's like the first few times it tries
to hit any address it doesn't find it and i have to make it keep
looking. i have also run spybot s&d, adaware, and AVG antivirus many
times without finding anything. i installed spycatcher, but it itself
was so invasive i had to uninstall it - it locked down the pc to the
point that i still can't hit it over the network. the problems
connecting didn't start until i had spycatcher, but uninstalling it
hasn't made a difference. i've also removed any registry entries with
spycatcher in them, still no progress.

this occurs in both internet explorer and firefox. i haven't tried any
other browsers. email client is outlook express. if anyone can help
at all, i would be so grateful!!!

Browsers and EMail programs are unsuitable as tools to test
internet connectivity. You must go to a Command Prompt level
and use proper diagnostic tools. You must also state the type of
your Internet connection. Dial-up? ADSL modem? Cable modem?
Other?

Do this as a first step:
- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
- Type these commands and paste the output into your reply:
ipconfig /all > c:\test.txt{Enter}
notepad c:\test.txt{Enter}
- Type these commands and report the result:
ping 66.249.89.99{Enter}
ping www.google.com{Enter}

If the problem occured after installation of Spycatcher, since removed, it
might tend to suggest either a remnent has been left, or it altered a
setting which hasnt been reset after the removal.
