Hello all...

I recently purchased a USB 2.0 video capture device by ADSText called DVD
Xpress. It comes with software that can be used to do video captures, and
this seems to work fine. However, when I try to capture into Movie Maker, I
get an error:

The video device can not be used at this time because there has been an
error when starting the device.

If I try it again, MovieMaker crashes.

The device is installed properly, shows up in Control Panel, work with it's
own software, etc.

Any idea why this might be happening? Thank you in advance.

MM is designed to work with digital equipment connected by firewire. If you
like using MM, capture with the app DVD Xpress, save in here as a dv-avi
file and import this into MM.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that is totally accurate. The help
files makes several references to capturing video from an analog device. For
example:

Analog camera or VCR connected to an analog capture card. In this
configuration, you connect a camera or VCR to an analog capture card. For
example, you could connect the video line out on the camera to the video line
in on the capture card. You could then to connect the left and right audio
lines (often through RCA-style left- and right- channel connectors to a
single 3.5mm stereo plug adapter) to the line in on your audio card (or
analog video capture card if your card has both audio and video). If both
your camera and capture card provide S-video connections, you could also
choose to use the S-video connection to record the video while leaving the
audio connectors attached so the audio is captured. Again, the specific
configuration depends on your hardware.

Although that snipped does not mention connecting to a USB port, I have to
assume that would be the same thing.

The DVD Xpress capture device is an MPEG one... which Movie Maker won't work
directly with....

You could use the software that came with the device to capture lower
quality MPEG-1 files and use those in Movie Maker.... or use it to capture
DVD quality MPEG-2 files, and then use other software (such as TMPGEnc) to
convert them to AVI files to use in Movie Maker.
