problem burning to types of disc

Ok, maybe I need new DVD burner maybe not. For some reason I can burn to +RW
but when I try to burn -R it says rude words. I used to be able to burn to
-R, even the same brand (Pheonix) that is now not working. Plain English
answers preferred. Please do not just send me to websites. Thanks for help
