Problem after transfer of PPT file to new computer

In copying the ppt file from the desktop computer(using PP 2003) there was
apparently no problem BUT it is impossible to save any changes. Although the
software runs in ‘Compatibility Mode’, the error message ‘PowerPoint found an
error that it cannot correct. Save presentations, quit and then restart
PowerPoint’. The same error message appears with the other options listed
under the file menu.

Make sure that your PowerPoint 2003 has the latest updates. This may also
help.

Dear Michael,
Thank you for your help. The problem still exists after updating PP 2003
and transferring to the laptop. An option to make compatible also gave the

Click File again and the third option is Convert - 'This action will convert
the document to the newest format Converting allows you to use all the
featured of PowerPoint, reduces the size of your file. The document will be
replaced by the converted version'
Clicked OK and again got the dereaded error message ‘PowerPoint found an
error that it cannot correct. Save presentations, quit and then restart
PowerPoint’.

Which version of PowerPoint are you using I guess on the Laptop? Why are you
trying to convert?. If you want your 2003 presentation to be compatible with
earlier versions of PowerPoint 97 and later. Under tools, Options, Edit,
checkmark the items under Disable new features.

I cannot find your last message for some unknown reason. However, I did get
a printout earlier and the current situation is as follows:
Using PP 2003 from my desktop, under Tools, edit, checked the three items
under Disable New Features. Saved. Copied the ppt file (via a portable hard
disk) to my laptop running PP 2007 (Beta). Loaded the ppt file on the laptop
but again cannot save without getting the error message resulting in a no
save situation.
I need to copy to the laptop for a lecture and would like to do some editing
on the laptop.

You're using PowerPoint 2007, then. With 4 versions extant and one in the
oven, it's always a good idea to mention which you're using.

2007 is a *beta* version. It's still in testing. You *will* run into problems
like this. That's the nature of the beta beast.

So basically: if it hurts when you do that ... don't do that. ;-)

NOT 2007:

2007 is a *beta* version. It's still in testing. You *will* run into problems
like this. That's the nature of the beta beast. Using a beta for serious work
is a bit like loading a gun and taking careful aim at your foot. If you're
*very* lucky, you'll miss, but the odds are better that there'll be pain.

So basically: if it hurts when you do that ... don't do that. ;-)

The reason I am using the beta version is an attempt to solve any issues
BEFORE the final version appears next year. At the moment I suspect there is
still a lot of work to be done regarding compatibility.

I found PP2003 to be quite useful and would hope to upgrade to 2007 when
available next year. Obviously, I but do not want any current or past work
to be incompatible in the future simply because the large amount of time
already invested.

The ability to save from PP2007 is IMPOSSIBLE at the moment so is a great
time waster until the compatibility problem is solved.

Count on it; and that seems to be the toughest problem to really nail down. As
users, we do some of the strangest things, use the product in ways the
developers never intended. Sometimes we have very good reasons for it, other
times we're just flailing about trying to find a solution to the Problem du
Jour. Then mix in the number of PPT versions out there, PC and Mac, and the
number of paths presentations can take from one to another (sometimes back and
forth a few times). It's a wonder that any of it works at all. ;-)

PowerPoint 2007 Beta 2 problems.

Importing jpg pictures into PP is OK for 115 photographs. Transferring a
further 50 and THEN saving gave the error message ‘PowerPoint found an error
that it cannot correct. Save presentation, quit and then restart
PowerPoint’. It was impossible to do a proper save.

The reason that as many as 50 photos were added before saving is down to the
fact that saving is an incredibly SLOW process compared with PP 2003.

A message saying that the file was ‘Read Only’ was a puzzle. Using Windows
Explorer, the file properties showed that the Read Only box was not checked.
I noticed that instead of the ppt file expected, I found that it was pptx.
Perhaps this is normal – I don’t know.

A simple delete of a slide is also VERY SLOW when compared with PP 2003.
With the latter, the process is almost instantaneous.

Unfortunately, by comparison with PP2003, the program is not yet up to
standard in spite of the large amount of work that has obviously gone into
its development.

You should understand that MS won't necessarily see any beta problems reported
here. This is a peer to peer support group. Just us mushrooms trying to keep
from bumping into one another in the dark and hoping the stuff we're enmired in
isn't what we *think* it is. ;-)
