problem after full install xp pro

system works fine, am on it now..but

thought I installed firefox successfully, the icon is on my desktop and I
can open a browser window, but it won't connect to the internet. the error
popup says "the connection was refused when attempting to contact
start.mozilla.org"

I was able to download the exe file for the following programs but could not
complete installing them:
sun java- error popup said "the installer cannot proceed with the current
internet proxy settings"
yahoo IM- error pop up said "can't install yim could not communicate to the
network server error 26"

also I tried to register windows and that couldn't connect either, error
popup said "cannot contact network"

so even though I am connected to the internet there is some issue with just
some programs, although I could access the websites to download the exe file
it still thinks I'm not connected to the internet


note: xp firewall is disabled

Check for if the problem also exists in the Internet Explorer. If no,
this is a Mozilla problem and you should ask them for support.

Then read the article I mentioned. If this does not help, post to
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser
and also contact your ISP and Sysop. You may need some proxy or
special settings to make the Internet connection work on this
computer.
