'Wesley Vogel' wrote No, but the steps are the same for any full service
news server. The original poster's problem was that he followed the
directions in 'Microsoft Help and Support' and 'Outlook Express Help' for
checking a newsgroup or subscribing to a newsgroup. What his reported
symptoms show is that he had never set up 'Outlook Express' for USING a news
server. The advantages of using the news server provided by your ISP is
that customer support should provide all the help he needs. Neither
'Microsoft Help & Support' OR 'Outlook Express' treat the setup to use a
news server, and the language used is ambiguous and doesn't clearly state
that SUBSCRIBING to a newsgroup MUST be preceded by setting up 'Outlook
Express' (or any other newsreader).
Additionally you can ALWAYS post to microsoft.public.* newsgroups
irrespective of what problems Microsoft may be having, as they are de facto
Usenet newsgroups. As long as the news server you use is up, you can post
to any newsgroups it carries.
Also, news://msnews.microsoft.com is limited to just microsoft.public.*
newsgroups. Not exactly what I'd call a full service news server.
Finally, no, your posts don't help in this thread; they all assume the
original poster only wants access to microsoft.public.* newsgroups. The
original poster had a problem and posted here for help; it is highly likely
he is interested in a broad range of newsgroup. What he really needs is
directions on how to set up to use a news server that carries a lot of
newsgroups. His ISP has a vested interest in helping him use the services
it provides, and for which he pays.
