Problem adding Newsgroups to OE

I've followed the procedure outlined in Windows XP Help for adding the
newsgroups feature, namely

Standard Toolbar -> Toolbar Options -> Add/Remove -> Customize -> Comments
Tab -> Categories List -> Click on Go, and from the Commands list select
News and drag it to the Go menu, etc.

It is at this point I encounter the problem, as 'News' is not an available
selection from the 'Commands List'.

Any suggestions for adding News to the list so that I may complete the
process ?

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Trying to setup the newsreader, as described in the procedure above. I know
how to subscribe to specific newsgroups from prior OE experience. This
message is being sent from another machine with Win98 installed.

Well...I`ve been trying to setup a newsreader in Outlook Express, and I
have read and copied
some of those pages given here, without success. My cableone tells me
they support newsreaders,
but on Outlook Express it says the server could not be found, so I`m
just about in the notion of
giving the idea up. Any help is appreciated.

Read this, then click on the ahuma link...

MICROSOFT PUBLIC NEWSGROUPS
[[There are many valuable newsgroups on the msnews.microsoft.com server, on
nearly every available topic and in many different languages. Clicking the
links below will automatically create any necessary account configuration in
Outlook Express and take you directly to the newsgroup you have selected -
no complicated technical configurations are needed!]]

Then all you have to do is scroll down and click on the newsgroup links that
you want to subscribe to.

You must set up your newsreader to use the news server provided by your ISP.
If you are getting the message that the news server could not be found, it
means you have not used the correct name for the news server. For example,
I use Earthlink for an ISP, and the news server name is
'news.east.earthlink.net'. You will also need your ISP account name and
your password to access the news server of your ISP. Customer support at
your ISP should be able to set you through the exact process in just a few
minutes over the phone, or with something like Earthlink's instant chat over
the Internet. There are a few other settings, but most likely they are just
the default settings. The settings for connecting to your ISPs news server
are reached by
#1. Click on 'Tools'
#2. Select 'Accounts'
#3. Click on the 'News' tab
#4. Click on 'Add'
#5. Select 'News'
#6. Enter the information the 'Internet Connect Wizard' requests:

a. the name you wish to appear as the 'from' name

b. the email address you want to appear on your posts (this should
not be your real email address, as spammers and some internet worms harvest
email addresses from Usenet newsgroups; use anything you want followed by
'@invalid.com', which is guaranteed NOT to be any email address in use.)

c. the name of the internet news server given to you by your ISP;
check the box 'My news server requires me to log on' (which most likely your
ISP does require)

d. on the next window that appears, enter your actual ISP account
name (which might be your primary email address) and your actual account
password (these two items will never appear on any of your news group
posts.)

That's it! Just make sure you get the name of your ISPs news server and any
other details that might be different from technical default settings.

Your ISP really should have solved your problem in 5 minutes or less. The
directions in 'Microsoft XP Help' you quote are just ambiguous at best and
flat wrong at worst as far as setting up Outlook Express to USE a news
server. The directions seem to be for subscribing to a Usenet news group
AFTER you have set up a 'News' account in Outlook Express. And for that,
you need the name your ISP gives it's news server.

I hope this helps. Please post your results here.

You do *NOT* have to use your ISP's news server.

I do not use news://netnews.comcast.net which is my ISP's.

I use news://msnews.microsoft.com

There are advantages to not using Microsoft's news server from time to time,
like when it's down. ;-) Occasionally you can still post if using your
ISP's news server.

'Wesley Vogel' wrote No, but the steps are the same for any full service
news server. The original poster's problem was that he followed the
directions in 'Microsoft Help and Support' and 'Outlook Express Help' for
checking a newsgroup or subscribing to a newsgroup. What his reported
symptoms show is that he had never set up 'Outlook Express' for USING a news
server. The advantages of using the news server provided by your ISP is
that customer support should provide all the help he needs. Neither
'Microsoft Help & Support' OR 'Outlook Express' treat the setup to use a
news server, and the language used is ambiguous and doesn't clearly state
that SUBSCRIBING to a newsgroup MUST be preceded by setting up 'Outlook
Express' (or any other newsreader).

Additionally you can ALWAYS post to microsoft.public.* newsgroups
irrespective of what problems Microsoft may be having, as they are de facto
Usenet newsgroups. As long as the news server you use is up, you can post
to any newsgroups it carries.

Also, news://msnews.microsoft.com is limited to just microsoft.public.*
newsgroups. Not exactly what I'd call a full service news server.

Finally, no, your posts don't help in this thread; they all assume the
original poster only wants access to microsoft.public.* newsgroups. The
original poster had a problem and posted here for help; it is highly likely
he is interested in a broad range of newsgroup. What he really needs is
directions on how to set up to use a news server that carries a lot of
newsgroups. His ISP has a vested interest in helping him use the services
it provides, and for which he pays.
