I have gone past the 30 days now so I can only use the safe mode. I
have had two different Microsoft guys try to help me over the phone (a
total of 4 hours) and I still can't get past the first option screen.
The screen has these options: 1.Activate over the internet 2. Activate
over the phone 3. Remind me later. I can choose any of the options but
when I click the next button it doesn't go to the next screen. You can
see the button activate but nothing happens. Microsoft is sending me a
copy of the XP operating system but I will have to back everything up
and I don't want do that. The upgade was working great except I can't
activate it. Any ideas?

You can reinstall Windows XP over the old installation as a repair
installation. Nothing will be affected but the operating system. It would
be prudent to back up your data (always a good idea), but not necessary.
Just as a Windows installation can be upgraded without losing programs,
program associations, and data, so can Windows XP be reinstalled over a
previous installation. But since you are already in extensive phone contact
with Microsoft, you really should stick with them since you have already (I
hope) given them MUCH more information than in your post here.

Unfortunately Microsoft sometimes makes it difficult to do anything. I
have tried the repair function many times in the past without it
helping my problem, although I'm not saying it doesn't work for some
people. The easiest and fastest work around I have found is to format
and do a new install, as a result of doing this I have never had to
activate my copy of windoze. As you already know it is very important
to have a good copy of anything you hope to reinstall on your puter.I
know some will frown at this but my computer wont allow me to use
"GMAIL" with SP2 installed......doesnt make sense but its the way it
is, I have talked to the "experts" and they say its not possible but it
does happen and it wont work even with clean formatted install (I am
able to keep my computer fairly secure without it, I have had friends
try and breach my security and were unable, but Im sure it possible if
someone tries hard enough.........In my opinion all computers are
different and react different, so I go with what works for me. Good
luck, and let us know the outcome, maybe what you do will help the next
guy.

Thanks for the help guys, I ran the repair install last night and I
found a problem with the install. When the install was complete it
goes to a screen that says welcome to windows XP and plays some
background music. I remember this happening the last time I tried a
repair install too. I can't get past this screen. The "next" button
doesn't do anything and I have to turn the machine off and restart.
When I restarted, it checked for files missing and finished them.
Could this be the root of my problem with activation. Thanks again
