I am not very good at excel formuals and I am confused as to how to
create a formual for a family worksheet. We have 3 people who make
purchases towards a series of gifts. I want to find a way to create a
formula to calculate who owes who based on the total cost of the items
and what they paid. Each person needs to pay the same amount and pay
it to the person that spent more. For example if

person1 paid $100
person 2 paid $100
Each person would owe $66 (total./3)
then Person 3 would owe $33 to P.1 and P2

I have:

The total paid for person 1
The total paid for person 2
The total paid for person 3

I need to figure out:

Person 1 owes person 2
Person 1 owes person 3
Person 2 owes person 1
Person 2 owes person 3
Person 3 owes person 1
Person 3 owes person 2

Sorry to bug you all with this. Any help would be apprciated

One way:

A1: <total cost>
A2: <person 1 paid>
A3: <person 2 paid>
A4: <person 3 paid>

Then

B1: =A1/3 <=== fair split
B2: =A2 - B$1 <=== amount owed or owing for Person 1
B3: =A3 - B$1 <=== amount owed or owing for Person 2
B4: =A4 - B$1 <=== amount owed or owing for Person 3

Where a positive number is the amount owed to the person, and a negative
number the amount they owe.

With three people, it should be clear from whom the payments should come
and to whom they should go.
