Hi,

My computer was running fine on W98SE.
Without any change in hardware, I did a fresh install of Win XP Pro, (no
Service pack installed yet).
I then installed IE6 (no service pack either), and configured my internet
connection (using ADSL).

My problem is that XP systematically crashes, 5 to 10 mn after connecting
to the internet.
It always says there was a problem with the RPC service that encountered a
problem, and it shuts down.

I checked on Microsoft site, found nothing.
The problem is that I can't download anything from Internet because of these
crashes.

Any idea or suggestion ?
Did anyone see these crashes before ?

Thanks for helping

You've probably got the Nachi worm, or something similar
to that or the MSBlast that have been going around.
You'll get it within minutes of being online if you have
no firewall/antivirus running...at least that's pretty
much exactly what happened to me a couple weeks ago.

Good luck,
Mike

You must not have checked the Microsoft website very thoroughly. They have
information on this issue on just about every one of their opening pages. :)

Go to the following website for the fix.

Scroll down to line 257 and click the "Remote Procedure Call Worm A-E" link.

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet before installing the
KB823980 Hotfix and before enabling a firewall, you're very likely to
be infected now.
