I have had this printer for 5 years and it works fine for me (word
processing and an occassional Greetings Workshop card).

Lately, every so often (maybe once every 20 pages) it will stop in the
middle of printing. The lights will flash and it won't even turn off. I have
to disconnect the power cord. When I turn it back on, it makes a funny kind
of sound (hard to describe -- maybe a groaning sound). The cartridge then
goes through the cleaning routine and then it works fine until the next
time. Incidentally, when this happens, the cartridge is always on the left
side. I wonder if it is just getting stuck on something.

Any ideas??

I know it's an old printer -- but I like it. However, if I have to get a new
one, what would be the best comparable one at a good price for the meager
purposes I've mentioned?

MB,
I had a 600 for a long time and thought it was a great printer, but it
finally gave out. I replaced it with a C82, which is also a good printer,
but it lacks the wide paper feed ability. Only goes to 8/12". You might try
cleaning the silver colored bar that the print head rides on with alcohol
and lube it VERY lightly with sewing machine oil. You might have a bind in
the system.
Good luck.

The groaning or creaking does occur when the guide shaft is completely dry:
clean it (its the chrome long thingy, and apply a few drops of WD40 or
silica grease, gun oil etc.
Then it may well fly again... Good luck
