Prob with 3rd party app installing old MS XML Core Services DLLs

Hello everyone,

Can you tell me what's important to know about the way installers handle the
XML Core Services versions?

I'm running Windows Server 2008 x64. I just installed OmniPage 4 OCR
software for a NEW Canon printer, and it seems to have overwritten several
DLLs in SysWOW64, giving me 2002 versions. I noticed this when, during
installation, I got a "failed to register" error on a MSXML4.dll that's dated
4.10.9404.0. It wouldn't register even with regsvr32, and that's where my
understanding stops.

Should I download the hotfix that has the latest version of MSXML4.dll for
Windows Server x64? (It seems to be KB954430, although it says it's for
Windows Web Server 2008.)

If so, what do I do about all the other crap this installer put in my system
folders? There are a bunch of other DLLs dated 2001 through 2003. These are
the ones in the SysWOW64 folder. I didn't find anything too old in the
system32 folder:

mfc71u
msvcp71 [just a C library version]
msvcr71 [just a C library resources]
msxml4
msxml4r
mfc70
mfc70u
msvcp70 [just a C library version]
msvci70 [just a C library version]
msvcr70 [just a C library version]
gdiplus

Any advice very much appreciated!

Sincerely,
a.k.a.

Yes, Jonathan, it's Nuance's OmniPage SE 4. It's a special package that is
supplied to printer manufacturers, to package with their drivers and
bloatware. In my case, it's Canon. This is a new Canon printer.

Could you answer the question, please?

Within a few hours, Windows Update had told me there was a new version of XML
Core Services 4.0 available. (The KB954430 update).

I tried downloading and installing, and the installation failed.

What are the next steps?

This is a fresh installation. I'm going to be set back half a day if I have
to reinstall all drivers from my first backup image. (I say that because this
app latched onto the registry at the same time as all the drivers. Grrr.)

If anyone has advice on rolling back the registry -- or otherwise fixing
this, I'd be grateful. Even suggestions about what other discussion group to
try.

Again, at this point, Windows Update supplied the MS XML Core Services 4.0
patch on its own, but it failed to install.

Another day, another failed attempt by WU to get the XML Core Services patch
to install.

I've already uninstalled the app, and it didn't change anything.

Please, can anyone please give a description of the procedures for repairing
registry entries?

Thank you,
