I have a Vista laptop and an XP desktop asn am having trouble sharing files.
I have followed the advice from previous threads with no luck. I have set up
a new workgroup, turned off the firewalls, turned off the password
protection, and can see the other folder, but I am still not allowed!

Any idea?

Instead of turning off password protection, try creating identical user
accounts and passwords on both machines. If you wish a machine to boot
directly to the Desktop (into one particular user's account) for
convenience, you can do this. The instructions at this link work for
both XP and Vista:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -
