SpyAxe got onto my computer which I found with an MS Anti-Spyware scan.
I thought that MS's Anti-Spyware was supposed to stop these kinds of
intrusions before they could gain access to a computer.

No, MSAS is generally a reactive application. It tends to deal with spyware
after it is already on your computer. If your looking for protection before it
can download to your computer, you'd perhaps be interested in SpywareBlaster.

Oh, and it sure doesn't hurt to have both of these applications for multiple
layers of protection.

MSAS monitors. That means it finds something AFTER it got it and tries to
eradicate it. If you want something proactive, add Prevx Home - but expect
lots of prompts asking you what to allow to run or make changes so obviously
YOU must have the expertise since it is your choices and education that
dictate how secure is your system. As with MSAS incurring some performance
penalty (anything that runs and interrogates takes some CPU cycles), also
expect some performance penalty for Prevx, and for your anti-virus, and for
your firewall, and for whatever else you load into memory to execute.
