I'm not sure if you are familiar with the game "Privateer
2" but it's a game that is usually run under MS-DOS.

I'm running windows XP on my laptop, and after I installed
the game, I created a shortcut called "Dark.exe" change the
properties and everything, however when I run the program I
get this error message:
Privateer 2 Fatal Error - cdromread - READ STATUS
ERROR=ffff8103
1000000000000000000000 ....etc
Wonga = 13500 Creds

Any ideas what went wrong?

I appreciate your help in advance :)
Good Day

Amine,

I did a web search for "Privateer 2" and found a forum site
(http://forum.asiaco.com/) where someone named Timour posted this solution
that may help you with your CD-rom issue (see original post at
http://forum.asiaco.com/cgi-bin/forum/forum.cgi?c=msg&fid=priv2&mid=243).

Well it's little crappy solution but should be fine for your problem.
If you're running dos version of priv2 in windows XP you should try creating
shorcut on the desktop for example to the dark.exe. Windows automatically
creates .pif file for the executable. When you launch the game using this
shortcut windows automatically run autoexec.nt file that provides some
necessery dos emulation stuff in order to run things smoothly. This file
usually located in the windows/system32 directory. Open this file and find
two strings:

REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

at the beginning of the second string put REM so it's then will read:
REM lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

This will avoid real mode emulation of CDROM drive. save and close.
Also if it does not helps verify that in the properties dialog of your
shortcut to dark.exe on the tab "Program" under the button "Advanced" you
indicated MS-DOS initialization file autoexec.nt you just edited. By default
it is the file located in windows\system32 directory.

Have fun. BTW. You should also try some 3rd parties mouse drivers and
slowdown programs in order to make game playable in Win XP. I'm working on
this problem now, good thing is start on is http://ntvdm.cjb.net/ Please
don't ask me what to do with it...."

Hope this helps.
