Is there any software that will permit two computers to communicate directly
with each other and send files back and forth - bypassing email and third party
servers and relays and 'search' facilities? I want to swap pictures with my son
since he rarely gets a chance to visit.
I know there is (was?) commercial software to do this (DropChutePro) but I am
hoping that there is some free ware by now.
Thanks mucho
John

Maybe you could set up an FTP server and your son could use an FTP client
to download and vice versa.

Filezilla has a good server and client: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

Dude, thanks for that! Got it now. Can't even see anything
called "Download Now". Wouldn't have found it if you hadn't
pointed out it was there. Most often when bitmaps are used for
text they are illegible for me. Don't know why. Using K-meleon.

You're very welcome.

Waste will do this also.

Great stuff! I've been trying to set up some form of file sharing between my
wireless notebook and desktop and I've been singularly unsuccessful until
now. I was able to set up DropChute without much effort at all. I suppose it
uses a dumbed-down form of FTP which is what I need right now!

Thanks.

Same here. Thanks for this, everyone. Moving stuff from my desktop to my
old antique laptop had been a real PITA. This seems to be just the
ticket.

Now to see how it works across the www...

Perhaps you can report back here about how you get on ? It looks
to me like it leaves port 23 open for anyone to get access to. I
couldn't see anywhere for password entry.

IMO finding file transfer, and/or chat, programs that go directly IP
to IP AND have security (password) features are very rare indeed.
Most lack security and/or go to external servers.

Maybe someone can recommend either/both with those features.
These sorts of requests are made regularly so it is good to know
what is currently available.

Regards, John.
