I have done as much research as I can and am still confused with this.
I know you can use any regular printer and print onto specific paper
that when heated will press onto clothing. Is this the way
professional prints do it?
You need to think how ink will interact with whatever you spray it at.
First, you know that there is inkjet paper and plain paper and that with
inkjet paper, somehow it works out that the image stays real sharp.
Suppose you ran blank newspaper through an inkjet, or blank facial
tissue paper through an inkjet.
The ink would spread out and run into an ugly mess, most likely.
So, what if you sprayed ink onto simple white cotton. It would be
somewhat the same..... the ink would tend to spread out.
Cloth can be treated to react better to the spraying on of ink. As
inkjet paper has been treaded to react better to the spraying on of ink.
Inkjet transfer paper has been formulated to make a pretty good image
that can be applied to cloth or other materials with heat to partly melt
transfer the image kind of like warm chewing gum can be transferred onto
your shirt.
There is dye sublimation where a specially treated or specially
constructed paper is used to transfer the ink dye to an object "through
the air" by having the ink dyes vaporize and condense onto the other object.
Special treatment....... to keep the ink from bleeding uncontrollably,
is a large part of the process.

Is there a method of printing directly to the t-shirt? Are there
printers that can do that? Is that the preferred method?
I have a pretty reasonable budget and want to purchase a printer
myself, but want a high quality and professional solution. At this
point I'm not sure what I'm even looking for.
Thanks in advance!
Find a friend who has a color printer. Buy some transfer paper. Make
some inages on the transfer paper. Use an iron to transfer it to a
suitable Tshirt or other item.
Look at it. Feel it.
Think.
Then come and ask more questions when you have $20 of hands on experience.
