Printing slows computer

I print anything, and the computer slows to less than a crawl.
And it's driving me nuts ....
Any help ?

I've set the printer priority to 3 from 1.
Page file is 500MB+ set to a drive which I'm not using at the time.
Windows XP with all the hotfixes/updates
HP Deskjet 640C
1.8G processor (does that matter ?)

All drivers are uptodate (I've checked)

My printer will thank you ... or I swear I'll kill it!

I had this occur when I still used an HP PC and the printer was connected
through a LPT connection. I dumped the old LPT printer, switched to a USB
printer and the problems were gone.

I suspect there is a bottleneck as regards data flow through an old LPT
port - particularly with today's fast CPU's and motherboards and RAM.....
they will all work much faster than the old Legacy LPT port... you might
check your BIOS settings to see if switching to EPP or ECP settings cure the
problem.

Thanks, I'll give that a whirl...
