Mean boss! ;-)

You didn't specify version of PowerPoint. You can try
modifying the handout master and or notes master and using
those as the print option.

-----Original Message-----
I have numerous slides that each have a list of bulleted
items. On a mouse click some items disappear from list
and some remain, those items that do not disappear need
to "drop" down in the list to fill in the spaces for the
now missing items while new data fly's in from the top of
the page as new items that are added items to the list.
To accomplish this I have the original list "disappear on
next mouse click", and the items that remain from the
original list were individually cut and pasted on top of
the original box in the same location that they appeared.
The items that remained then "move" down to fill in the
now blank spaces while the new data fly's in from the
top. Now, my boss wants to print slides!!! The problem I
have is that all of the slides look garbled because of all
of the text boxes overlaying on each other. This is my
first attempt at a PowerPoint project and I am cluesless
as to what to do next. Any suggestions?

I would use an add-in that captures screen builds as thy appear on the
screen. Luckily, someone has done the hard part for you.

Let's say that I have a presentation with a number of slides.

Each slide shows something on the screen, and has a linked sound
containing spoken comments.

Now I would also want to have background music which plays softly during
the whole presentation - that is, NOT linked to any individual slide but
continuous.

Two questions arise:

1. Can this be done, and if so, how?

2. Also, how do I regulate the background sound volume so that you can
still hear the spoken comments?

Oke

Morning Oke,

Having two sound files play at the same time can be done, but it depends on
what your computers sound card can handle. PowerPoint does not play sounds.
It gives that job to the operating system, that in turn, hands it off to the
sound card. PowerPoint only requests a sound to be played.

So, if you start sound A, which is a long clip that plays throughout the
presentation, and your sound card can only handle one input for sound, then
you will not hear any of the narration sound files.

If we go on the assumption that your card has the ability to play two
simultaneous sound file inputs, then the correct method would be to:

Insert | Movies & Sounds... | Sounds from file ... | {navigate to and select
the sound file} | OK
Click 'Yes' when asked if you want the sound file to play when slide is
shown.

For the background sound file only, do this...
SlideShow | Custom Animations | In animation pane double click on the sound
animation | {tab} Effect | {select} Stop Playing After | {enter} 999 slides

As far as the volume goes, you will need to edit the sound files themselves.
Because PowerPoint is not an audio program, it does not have the ability to
change the sounds it asks to be played.

You need to read this to better understand sounds and PowerPoint.

Thanks Bill. I can't fins an obvious option for sound animation in that
dialogue box though. There are options for entry effects and exit
effects which seem to be linked to objects in the slide. If I try to
select such an effect (e.g. entry) it oly allows for .wav sounds.

I would have liked to let iTunes play something... but that's .aiff
sounds or mp3.

Ok, from the fact that you have exit animations I can tell you are using
either PowerPoint 2002 or PowerPoint 2003.

About halfway down the animation pane you should find an animation that is
labeled with the sound files name. (You may need to expand this pane to
read it.) There is a pulldown arrow next to it, click on it. Select
"Effects" from the pulldown list.

If the animation is not there (Nothing in the list space between Property:
box and Re-order arrows) then select the sound object that was placed. Then
select Add effect button and choose "sound options", and "Play"

I don't recognize your description at all. The window/dialogue box
"Custom Animation" contains a box in the upper left corner labelled
"Select to animate". In this box is a list of things that exist on the
present slide, e.g. "Title 1: bla bla".

Below that box is another one labelled "Preview, with a start and stop
button.

To the right of these, a larger box has three buttons at the top:
Effects, Order and Timing, and Options. Below these buttons are two
sections. The top one is labelled "Entry animation and sound" and has
three popup menus: Entry effect, Entry sound and After animation. Only
the first one of these is active. That menu dies not contain any sound
choices.
Below that is a similar section for "Exit animation and sound" with two
popup menus, Exit effect and Exit sound. Only the fist of these is active.

What version of PowerPoint do you have?

Also, what operating system?

Office for MacOS X.

I know that the computer can play more than one sound at a time. Tried
placing two sounds on the same slide ny using Inster/Sound from file,
but they only play in sequence, not simultaneously.

Oke

Well no WONDER we're confusing one another. You've fallen in among Windows
users! Run!

You might want to post to Public.Mac.Office.Powerpoint

I tried that group but got this posting:

The more appropriate newsgroup for this forum is:

That one does not exist on the local newsserver. Are you saying that
microsoft.public.powerpoint is an exclusively windows-oriented forum?

Oke

It's generally a better bet to access these newsgroups via the
msnews.microsoft.com server (open to anyone, no need for a subscription or
anything).

microsoft.public.powerpoint is for all PowerPoint users but tends to be mostly
Windows since the Mac folk have their own group. For general "How to use PPT"
info, this may be the best group, simply because it's the busiest. I only
suggested posting in the Mac group because that's where you'll find Mac-specific
info.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint 2002 and PowerPoint 2003 do not have the capability to print
with animations, without resorting to VBA or add-ins, due to the complexity
and non-sequential possibilities added to animation effects beginning with
PowerPoint 2002.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) feel strongly that PowerPoint
should include some kind feature for printing slides/handouts/notes other
than how they appear in normal/slide view, don't forget to send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible. Each submission should be
a single suggestion (not a list of suggestions).
