Printing Problems

I have come to the conclusion that HP printers and scanners don't work very
well with XP. If you look down the list of questions about 90% of the
questions will be from HP owners. I had a PC that had 98 and Me and did not
have a problem. When I purchased this one with XP Home the problems started.
I contacted HP and Microsoft and each blamed each other. I have uninstalled
and reinstalled at least a dozen times and deleted all files and drivers and
then reinstalled but still the same problem. I personally know of at least 6
people that have problems with HP printers are scanners and we have all come
to the same conclusion. HP does not work very well with XP. I hope they do
better with Vista although it's going to be at least a year before I purchase
a new PC. Just some thoughts.

"about 90% of the questions will be from HP owners."?
That is because almost 90% of the owners have HP printers.
If users follow the proper installation instructions they would
eliminate most of the problems posted in these NewsGroups.
HP is the #1 seller of printers followed by Epson, Lexmark, etc.
Most Dell printers are from Lexmark.

You are exactly right and that is why 90% of the problems are with HP
printers and/or scanners. I have been here and had problems long enough to
know what will work and what want. HP just plain sucks when it comes to the
compatability with XP.

Byte is correct, by far the most printers sold are HP. I have significant
experience installing printers/scanners and multifunctions (totalling several
thousand) from just about all manufacturers and I have not had an installation
problem with an HP printer that was not easy to fix, on one occasion only I had
to call HP and they provided a work around until new drivers were released.
Nearly all are installed on XP. If I have an issue with HP it is only with the
size of some of the installation packages but not with the content. Clearly you
have had some issues, bad experiences colour our judgement. I cannot agree that
HP has more problems than Canon, Epson, Brother et al.

I got a problem I sure wish you would fix. Look down a couple of questions
and click the Photosmart P1100 question and after you fix that the I got a HP
4200c question. When I had Windows 98 on my old PC they worked great, then
ever since I got my new PC with XP Home they have never worked like they did
with 98. Always something.

Simple, download and update/upgrade the drivers that are compatible
with XP for your 4200c printer and install them should fix it. Next time,
please start your own post, not on other OP's.

I have uninstalled the scanner and printer at least a dozen times and have
gone to the HP support and downloaded and installed the drivers each time. I
don't think this was on someone's post except mine.
