Printing Problems Windows XP

I upgraded from Windows ME to XP Home and now it will not recognize the printer. I ran the diagnostics in XP help with no success. I removed the driver, port lpt1 under systems device, and hpdeskjet 940c print software that worked in ME. After I restart the computer, the system recognizes new hardware and sucessfully loads the driver. It will work then, but not after I shut down and resart. Then nothing.
 
Have you looked on the HP website for drivers compatible with XP?
