I recently purchased a new computer and have reconfigured my home network in
such a way that on my main computer I only have an account for myself and my
wife (not the kids). On the other 3 computers I have an account for every
family member. Our only printer is also connected to the main computer. In
the past I had all our accounts on every computer and never had a problem
printing to the printer on the main computer from any account. Now with this
new configuration I can not print from our kids accounts from two of the
computers I would really appreciate if someone could give me some pointers
of what I can do to fix this problem. If this is of an importance, the kids
accounts are Limited.
This is what I have tried and concluded so far:
1) Two of the computers have XP Pro installed (one of them the main
computer) and the other two XP Home. I can print from our kids account from
the computer that have XP Pro installed. One difference I can see is the
network printer configuration that is seems like XP picked up automatically.
On the XP Home computers the printer is using a port with the name of
"\\Computername\Printername" and the description field says "Local Port". On
the XP Pro computer on the other hand the port name is "TS001" and the
description field says "COMPUTERNAME: PRN2".
So I am guessing if I know how to configure a TS port, this should solve the
problem.
2) I have tried to add different groups and users to the printer security
tab and open up all permissions but with no success.
3) Do I need to change something in the local policies or change any other
type of configuration if configuring a TS port on a XP Home system does not
work or is nor enough?
4) Lastly, something that actually do work is that if I add accounts to the
main computer for my kids, I can print from all the computers. It just seems
funny that I have to have an account on the computer where the printer is
connected to that matches the account on the computer I am printing from. Is
this a XP Home limitation or can I manually configure a TS port as described
in (1) to get around this problem?
Thanks for any help in this matter....Mats
