Printing labels malfunction

With Word 2003, if I open a new document, type an address for a mailing
label, go to Tools, Letters and Mailings, Envelopes and Labels, select
label, and then print, a blank page prints first, then the label gets
printed. Since I would normally put the label sheet on top of any paper in
the printer, nothing gets printed on it; the printing appears on the sheet
of paper that was under the label sheet.

Now, I can compensate for this by remembering to put the label sheet under a
sheet of paper rather than on top, but I'd like to know how to make this
work right. It has not always worked this way; in the past, I could simply
put the label sheet in the printer on top of the paper and the label would
get printed correctly. Word is acting like there's a blank page in it's
print command that it processes before printing getting to the label sheet.
What might cause this? How can I fix it?

Come on folks, doesn't anyone have some thoughts on this? Why does Word
print a blank page before printing the label?

Open the printer folder in the control panel, right-click your printer, advanced
tab, separator page button, clear whatever is in the text dialogue.

Thanks for the suggestion. But, there were no separator pages.

What happens if you select 'new document' from the label wizard?
Did you put a header in normal.dot?
Does it cause the problem if you start Word in safe mode (hold the CTRL key
while starting Word)?

Select 'new document' from the label wizard had no effect.
No, I did not put a header in normal.dot, as far as I know. Do you mean
the header displayed via View, Header and Footer?
If I start Word in safe mode, the problem does not occur; label printing
starts on the first sheet.
I tired another test. I changed the name of normal.dot to normal.old,
then opened Word and did a label print test. It worked. So, I think I'll
just use the new normal.dot. I had two simple macros in the old one, but I
exported them and should be able to get them back into my normal.dot file.
Not much other preferential settings were lost, either.
Still don't know what caused the problem, but replacing normal.dot looks
like the easiest fix.

Starting in safe mode eliminates normal.dot (amongst other things). Given
that replacing normal.dot has worked, it seems likely that you had a header
in normal dot (maybe a paragraph mark). Do not use headers or footers in
normal.dot. As you have discovered you can copy loads of stuff from your old
template to the new one using the Organizer.
