Hello

Hope this is the right place to post this. I tried the security group a
couple of days ago but got no response.

I am trying to resolve a printing issue - I could not print plain black text
with Word, Outlook or even notepad (Printer is a Canon i865, stand alone
system Win 2k sp4). Any other colour was fine as were HTML formatted emails
but not plain text. Nozzle check patterns and printer test page were all
fine. I eventually cured it by removing security updates one by one.
Removing Kb896424 seemed to do the trick - Everything printed normally.
Reinstalling it caused the problem to reappear and deleting it again
restored normal printing.

So now I appear to have the choice of a system with a known security
vulnerability or a secure system from which I cannot print.

Canon support can only suggest installing the latest printer driver (which
has no effect).

Anyone else experienced anything similar? Anyone know of a fix? I've
searched Microsoft support and found other issues with this security update
but not this one.

Thanks in advance

This security update is for GDI which the spooler hands EMF data for
manipulation. I forwarded your post to someone on their test team. I'll
also send your post to the Canon device driver team here.

configure to print directly to the printer. Printer Properties, Advanced.
I will take longer to print

I will reinstall the security update and try printing direct to the printer
as you suggested.

Hi Alan,

Sorry I meant to respond to this sooner. We are aware of this problem and we
are working on a driver upgrade that will address this.

In the mean time the following solutions also work:

1) Uninstall Windows 2000 Hot Fix of KB896424.

Or

2) Workaround using driver settings:

- Turn off Grayscale (for some models)

- Turn off EMF spool (for some models)

- Use higher print quality.

Thanks,

-Dan

I have been experiencing the same problem with my Windows 2000 rig.
Even after uninstalling the update it continued not to work.

However, I found the disabling "Enable Advanced Printing Features" in
the advanced tab of the print properties provides a temporary fix. It
does however disable many useful things such as reverse order printing
though.

Another temporary fix is to append a single white character to the end
of the document. This forces the printer to use the small black
cartiridge as it thinks its a colour document, rather thant the large
black one with which the problem seems to be occuring with.
