Printing from DOS Program on a XP Dell to HP4100TN through a network

We have purchased a Dell with the XP operating system and
find we can not print through the network to another
printer from a dos program. We can print from the windows
but the Dos program must have the other printer set as
LPT2. I have entered at the command net use lpt2
\\spring\HP4100 /persistent:yes and this did not work. I
have searched all over the network and talked to several
and have figured out many are having this problem but
there are some who have it worked out. I am not a
computer savvy person but have been handed this problem by
default. Please help if you can.
