When you use a newsreader to 'subscribe' to a newsgroup, only the 'subject,
from, date, and other information is downloaded. There is a setting in
Outlook Express that specifies how many 'headers' to download at a time (300
is a good number.) The post bodies only need to be downloaded if you click
on the 'header' to read the message.
If you download all the headers you can then do a search for your topic by,
say, a word in the subject line. You can also search the post bodies IF you
have downloaded all of them. A more efficient way of searching in a
newsgroup you just subscribed to is use google, which preserves an archive
of ALL (as far as I know) Usenet newsgroups, kept current.
You can always 'unscribe' at any time. The 'subscribe' and 'unsubscribe' is
something that happens totally within your computer, and is not communicated
to the newsgroup. In fact, with Outlook Express, you can just 'go to' a
newsgroup without subscribing. When you close Outlook Express or move to
another function, OE will ask if you want to subscribe.
'Lurking' on a newsgroup like this one (reading without posting) is a good
way to learn about operating systems. 'Lurking' on newsgroups is the best
way to start. Not only will you learn, but you will begin to see the effect
of 'peer review' - bad information gets called down pretty quickly. There
are, however, some 'trashy' newsgroups - newsgroups that no longer have a
'community of users', and end up being filled with spam and worse. These
are immediately apparent just by looking at a few of the headers.
I am glad you have a work around for your envelop printing problem, but I
must say that the Dell explanation sounds a bit fishy.
