I recently purchased an I/O Magic "MagicWriter" 4x4x6 External CD burner
(DR-CDRW446EU). I am running a Micron Millennia XKU Pentium II/300MHz system
(I know - old as all get-out), and Windows XP Professional. I also have an
HP LaserJet 1100 that has worked perfectly for several years.

I connected the MagicWriter to my PC via the supplied USB port cable, and
then loaded the appropriate driver. The install completed without incident.
I chose NOT to load the supplied NERO ROM software, opting instead to use
the CD burning capability built into Windows XP - this is working fine.

My problem is this - when I now try to print anything to my HP LaserJet
1100, I get garbage characters on the printer. Turning the printer off and
on does not solve the issue. In order to print correctly, I need to turn off
the MagicWriter, delete my printer driver, re-add the printer driver, and
then I can print fine until I turn on the MagicWriter. The moment the
MagicWriter is powered on, I can no longer print.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this issue?

Sounds as if it could be an insufficient PSU issue. Older PCs came with
very low wattage PSUs (power supply units).... each USB port needs power.
When the system is overloaded, something's got to go. Sounds as if in this
case, you can't run both USB ports at once with the hardware devices you
have... even if the devices themselves are powered.
