Does anybody know if the the Canon I850 printer can print to cd-r /
dvd's directly? It appears it has the capability in this canon japan
photo...

url: http://cweb.canon.jp/bj/lineup/850i/feature.html#04

I called Canon US and they said they never heard of it. Why would
they offer the adapter in Japan but not in the US? I want this
capability for my I850 because I'm otherwise very happy with the I850.

If I can't I'll probably buy the Epson 960 ($349) which has this
capability. But why spend the $ if I don't have to.

Anybody know about this adapter?

Thanks,
Jamie

Jamie,

The photos and animation* on the link certainly look like this is a
product that is already available in Japan. It's not unusual for
companies to offer product in Japan that are not offered (yet) in the
USA. Perhaps this is something we'll be able to buy in a few
months.... or, if it's not working out well (lots of breakdowns),
perhaps never.

With the conpetition that Canon is likely to get from the Epsons that
print directly on CDs, I would expect Canon to offer something very
soon.

* For the animation, go to this link
http://cweb.canon.jp/bj/lineup/850i/index.html
and click on Pixus Funtion tour
Then click on F2 (the icon of a printed CD), and you can see how the
CD adapter works.

It's been available in Japan since 2002. I have to presume the North
American market has been eliminated by intimidation from organizations
like the RIAA which has deep pockets and swarms of lawyers to force the
issue of copyright upon Canon.

I doubt it...but that's just my opinion.

900?! No it doesn't I have an Epson Stylus Colour 900 sitting next to this
box right now and I can tell you categorically that it does not. Methinks
you meant the 950.

NO. It is the Photo 900 by Epson. It is confusing but there are two 900's.
Yours will not print on cd's but the Photo 900 WILL.

I sit corrected. It must be an American model number as I can't find it here
in the UK.

Wow, thanks for the animation link Charlie, that adapter is cool! I
want one of those so bad! I hope they offer it soon. Maybe I can
find a contact in Japan and have them send me one? I would presume it
would work with the US model? Humm.

The US got screwed out of this feature.

The US isn't special...Canada and Europe is getting "screwed" too. It
appears only Japan has the CD/DVD printing adaptor so far.

No, he's correct and so are you.

Epson reissued the same number.

The one you have is called the Epson Stylus Color 900. The one he is
referring to is the new Epson Stylus Color Photo 900, and it does indeed
have the ability to print on inkjet ready (they have a special white
surface to accept the ink) CDs, as does the 950 you referred to.
