Hi!

I´m having problems installing printers to Oem version of WinXPx64.

When I try to install any printer I get message saying: "Operation could not
completed. The print spooler service is not running.".
I have set the spooler to automatic and started it. When I press add a
printer I get a message again and spooler goes offline.
This is clean install and no previous printers so it has nothing to do with
corrupt or wrong version printer drivers.
When I look into even logs I see following message :

I´ve reinstalled Windows twice already and each time it does the same thing.
When I press add printer it ends up shutting down the spooler.

When I tryed to install XP it said cannot copy localspl.dll. I skipped that
file and tryed to expand it to system after windows was installed. Expand
said the file is corrupt and cannot be expanded. Then I googled for localspl
and copied found dll to system32. rebooted computer and tryed again but the
spooler just doesn´t want to stay up.

I checked the file dependencies and all files spoolsv needs are available
now, but the problem just stays within.

Do you have the installation disk that came with the printer?
Did you try to install it using the installation Wizard?
Did you connect this printer to your PC before installing the drivers?
Install the software first, during which you'll be prompted when to
connect it to your PC and also when to turn it on.

What is the source of the printer driver files? Are they on the OEM Windows
disk, a disk supplied by the printer maker, or a diwnload?

Clean install of Windows. It doesn´t have drivers for my printer.
When I start isntalling drivers by pressing add printer, spooler goes
offline. I have never even got to the part where I choose what printer or
drivers I use. Spooler shuts down instantly after pressing add printer. So
printer drivers has nothing to do with this.

I tryed other XPx64 cd and it didthe same thing, during clean new install of
Windows, it said localspl.dll cannot be be found. And after install
completed I tryed to add a printer and result was again the same, Spooler
goes offline right after pressing add printer. So again please NOTE this is
clean install, no previous printer drivers, printer isn´t plugged in.
Localspl.dll doesn´t exist, yet it is in the cd´s as packed file. I tryed to
expand it manually but I get error message saying The file is corrupt and
cannot be unpacked. Now how unlucky you have to be when 2 different XPx64
cd´s have same file corrupted???? Returning cd to dealer.

My system is Asus A8N-E, Athlon XP64 3000+, 2x Seagate SATA ST3200822AS
drives, 2x Samsung SATA HD16033,
Display Club3d G-Force 6600 PCI-E, Raid drivers NVidia SATA drivers
(newest), Forceware 6.66 CK804 (also new x64 only drivers).

I have checked memory with memory test and it came out clean. Partition C: I
install XPx64 I have formatted before each attempt. I´ve tryed the printer
on other computer and it works just fine, and I´ve installed normal XP to
this computer and everything works as it should.

So only thinks I can think of is XPx64 doesn´t support my motherboard, or my
motherboard drivers that where designed for XPx64 doesn´t work. I tryed
older mobo drivers that came with the motherboard and it didn´t help.

I think i´ll give up and install Linux, that atleast works :D

Localspl.dll is part of windows, itself and is part of the spooler software
necessary to operate printers. No surprise there.

It is found in the Windows dorectory, system32 sub-directory. Try doing a
search on the file name.

I have an ASUS nA8N-E mother board in use with Windows XP 64 bit as the
usual operating system. There are local and network printers installed which
operate correctly.

I'm sorry to say, I do not know what is causing your problems. However, I
still suspect the printer driver. More information about the printer's make
and model, the source of the driver would be useful. Forgive me asking if
you are sure it is a 64 bit driver.

Indeed, it would be useful to know if the printer installs properly under
LINUX.

As I tryed to point out the spooler shuts down even on clean windows install
that has no printers installed or any drivers in that matter.
And 2 faulty cd`s? Kinda makes me wonder whats going on, since my system
seems to run perfectly on 32 bit XP.

So I´ve totally ruled out the driver issue now. It has to be something else
causeing this. Maybe bad motherboard drivers or RAID drivers? What driver
set do you use?

I tryed to expand other files from XPx64 cd and I keep getting corrupt file
message on all of them so some how I have a feeling its the motherboard
drivers doing all this now.

Huoh! how many times I have to point out there is nothing installed in the
computer but Windows XP x64. No 3rd party programs, no printer drivers
because spooler goes offline in the instant I press add printer. No
display-drivers. Its totally CLEAN install if plain Windows.

As I pointed out I think I start installing Linux back to this system and
throw the cd back to dealer as faulty cd.

End of discussion.

Just in case it's a specific issue to your motherboard and the fact it's
x64, have you asked in the windows.64bit.general newsgroup?

I have crawled through all forums I know and no one has simular problems.
But it can´t be faulty motherboard, because on 32 bit XP everything runs as
it should. Just a bit slower compared to 64 bit.

i think I wait till theres stable drivers and possibly new SP for xp, if
those fix this error.

OK. I did misunderestand the point at which the failure occured.

On my XP 64 bit install, most drivers were either in-box (on the XP CD) or
installed aftrer completion of the OS install using the CD supplied with the
motherboard or DL by windows update. The latest BIOS version and RAID
drivers are on the ASUS web site. The printer driver I used is on the Canon
web site, downloads section.

Sometimes, if and when it is a failed spooler service causing the printer
install problem, you can overcome it by a forced start of the spooler or the
RPCS service followed by the spooler service. I have no confidence that
approach would work here. However, if you would lkke to try:

Open a command prompts by typing cmd in the start Run slot. Press
Enter.
Next type

net start spooler Press Enter
exit

When the window closes, try installing the printer.

If no joy, open the command window as above.

Type

net start RPCSS
net start spooler

Press Enter after each line.

Exit

Try installing.

Please let us know.

Although I don't usually recommend it, the file, Localspl.dll can be
obtained from several on-line sources. The current Windows CP 64 version is
5.2.3790.1830 and is part of SP1. A google search on the file name is
useful.

I must say, I am still quite bewildered by this problem.
